Golden Rail Express by ekster Golden Rail Express by ekster
In the spirit of the railway express travel posters from the art deco period, I decided to create my own: The Golden Rail Express.
I kept details to a bare minimum to emphasize the strong lines that make up the overall imagery and to stay true to the form. The train itself is roughly based on the Zephyr trains of that time period too, but I gave it a few of my own personal details.

Enjoy!

This is very good. Reminds me of those really old retro-style posters they used to get people to ride on trains

There's only one thing you still need: you need to print this onto a tin plate, and then hang it up all over town. See if people start asking about the train.

Though it is not a Zephyr (Which are to this day pulled by Diesels), this is a near splitting image of the Chicago, Milwaukee, Saint Paul, and Pacific Railroad's (More commonly called the Milwaukee Road) Hiawatha locomotives. Incredible! Absolutely! :D

You've captured the essence of the Streamliners and their kin so well! That was the acme of the train design... everything since with a very few exceptions has been a long decline.

And the colours, very nice. It's hard to go wrong with purple and gold.

This one settles it. Planes and trains and superb Deco styling, I've gotta watch you now. ;)

Indeed, the early Zephyr trains from that era were the epitome of class. Only if I had the ticket, and a time machine ;P

I just surfed over here by chance today. I love this and your Cafe Aroma (haven't done the rest of your gallery yet). The twenties/art deco era has great nostalgia for me, Raymond Loewy designs and all that.

I have long adored trains and riding the rail. Personally, I think the train is the most romantic mode of travel. Plus it seems that every band has a railroad/train song.

In any event, when I was high school kid I would come home from school, go to sleep immediately, and then wake up around 11 or midnight. In essence, I made school the last part of my day. Anywho...one of my favorite spots to hang out was the Dunkin Donuts right near the Erie train station. Every now and again I'd cruise up the tracks and photograph them in the wee small hours of the morning.

Those were freighters and coal trains, and clearly this is neither, but I still love the tailored lines and streamlined bullet look. I would buy a ticket.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to share such wonderful thoughts :) And you are absolutely right! There's just something about the train that sets it apart from other modes of transportation. In many ways, the notion of time is also associated with luxury, and the train is pretty much one of the few more leisure modes of travel we have left. There's just something alluring about them that stays timeless

It was my pleasure. I absolutely dig what you do with vector art. How do you feel about some of the visuals in The Incredibles.

I'm still saving for a trip on the Orient Express. It runs through Paris, Prague, Vienna, and Istanbul, among others. The luxury is very pricey, but what a trip!

I absolutely love the settings and visual backdrop that was in The Incredibles. I'd have to say it's definitely one of my favorite contemporary animated flicks

Wow, that is certainly the trip that everyone can only dream about (unless of course, a person's already wealthy a million times over) I can only imagine the luxury and splendour of such a trip, and hope that one day I'll be able to go on it as well. Looks like you'll meet that dream sooner than I :)

I was reading in Wired about the talent Pixar assembled for the Incredibles. Apparently a lot of the animation in the movie hadn't been done before. So Pixar goes to the best tech schools around start offering jobs to some of the students. Apparently these kids were working on things they don't have degrees for yet. At that point in their lives, expecially for students at MIT, RIT, and Georgia Tech, a job is a formality. So they quit school and go to work for 200 grand a year. Who needs a degree at that rate? How awesome is that?

I caught that article too :) Pretty damn amazing stuff, and current big ticket animation studios is really where a lot of research is going on as well since ideas get generated from there out of financial necessity, and quickly! Same goes with the gaming industry, if it weren't for those folks pushing the technological trends, things wouldn't be developing as fast. And yes, once you are getting 200 grand a year to do some really forefront stuff, a degree is kind of a moot point ;)

Not only do they have the talent, but the gaming and animation studios have all the funding you could imagine. They have absolutely every resource available to them. Man, to be able to hang out in an environment where creativity isn't just encouraged, it's enforced!
